OUR HISTORY
FROM THE START
APG has been doing business in the Tampa Bay area since 1984. However, our roots go back over a century to The Doan Electric Company of Cleveland, Ohio, founded in 1915 by A. P. Goulder, the APG of our name. Mr. Goulder began his business converting gas lighting to electric lighting and doing other small electrical repair work before growing the company into one of the largest and most respected electrical contracting companies in Northeast Ohio.

OUR STORY
For over 40 years, our team has been a leader in electrical contracting, delivering top-quality installations across the Tampa Bay area and beyond. Built on the principles of integrity, excellence, customer service, and teamwork, the company has grown from a small startup into a full-service electrical contractor known for its expertise and commitment to getting the job done right.
The story began in 1984 when John Kavula and Jerry Lightner partnered with principals from The Doan Electric Company of Cleveland, Ohio—one of the most respected electrical contractors in the region—to establish APG Electric in Largo, Florida. By the end of its first year, the company had grown to over 25 employees and surpassed $1.1 million in sales.
As the industry evolved, so did our capabilities. In 1994, services expanded beyond traditional electrical construction to include electrical engineering and design. Over the years, fire alarm, voice/data/video, security, and audio/visual systems were added, along with virtual design and construction services. This commitment to innovation positioned the company as a trusted partner for complex, high-profile projects.
A major milestone came in 1999 with the construction of Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure – The Lost Continent, the largest contract in company history at the time. This project marked the beginning of expansion into Central Florida, leading to the establishment of a satellite office in Orlando, which later relocated to downtown Lakeland.
With steady growth came leadership transitions. In 2009, John and Jerry began shifting management responsibilities to the next generation, appointing Michael Henley as President and Chris Johnson as Executive Vice President. Under their leadership, the company took on larger and more complex projects, including museums, luxury hotels, and multiple brand-new hospitals. In November 2023, Jonathan Henley was promoted to Vice President and became the primary qualifier for the business, a role John had held for 40 years.
In 2024, the company celebrated its 40th year in business. This milestone also marked a new chapter with the partnership formed through Kelso Industries, strengthening future opportunities while preserving the core values that have defined us for decades. Following the acquisition, founders John Kavula and Jerry Lightner officially stepped down, closing out their impactful careers and passing the torch to a leadership team dedicated to carrying on their legacy.
Today, under the guidance of President Michael Henley, Executive Vice President Chris Johnson, and Vice President Jonathan Henley, our team continues to thrive. With five specialized groups working together as one company, we remain committed to designing and installing wired building systems with one mission in mind—Do it right!
