A GATEWAY TO NEW HEIGHTS: Tampa International Airport

APG is proud to play a key role in the ongoing improvements at Tampa International Airport, including the recently completed 326,000-square-foot CAE Defense and Security campus.

As we manage multiple simultaneous projects, each brings its own unique challenges. These include work on the red side vertical circulation building and shuttle platform, the baggage claim level ceiling replacement, the expansion at Airside A and E security screening checkpoints, and replacing the switchgear in the long-term parking garage. Project Superintendent Chris Gobright has been leading all four jobs, maintaining seamless coordination with the team to ensure that all critical airport systems are reviewed daily. These morning discussions allow us to guarantee zero disruption to the day-to-day operations of the airport.

The participation of multiple general contractors highlights our industry reputation and adaptability. Our process begins with the original construction documents, where we model panels, transformers, light fixtures, and equipment into a digital layout before receiving submittals. This involves placing conduits, grouping circuits for efficient routing, and coordinating with other trades to prevent clashes. If adjustments are needed, we submit RFIs (Requests for Information) to resolve issues before and during construction. We provide updated shop drawings to guide our field teams as construction progresses and plans evolve. We adapt to changes throughout the project and finalize as-built drawings, ensuring accuracy and alignment with the overall vision.

Coordinating these diverse projects demands precision and flexibility, with work schedules that include late-night and early-morning shifts. Our Security, Technology, Life Safety, and BIM teams collaborate seamlessly to keep these efforts moving forward. It’s the adaptability and dedication of our team that ensures the success of these vital projects.

We extend our deepest thanks to our partners at Hensel Phelps, Suffolk, DPR, and the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority. Their collaboration and teamwork are integral to achieving our shared goals.

Looking ahead, we are excited to begin the bidding process for Airside D. This new terminal will feature 16 gates, advanced security technology, expanded concessions, modern lounge spaces, and a customs and border protection facility for international arrivals. Airside D will be the first new airside terminal at TPA in nearly two decades, enhancing the airport’s capacity and elevating the passenger experience.

APG remains dedicated to the Tampa Bay area, and we are grateful for the opportunity to support the growth and modernization of our own Tampa International Airport.
