APG is proud to celebrate a major milestone on the Airside D project at Tampa International Airport, which has officially transitioned from preconstruction into full construction. With site work now underway, Airside D stands as our largest project to date and a defining achievement for our team.
The new Airside D will encompass approximately 600,000 square feet of new construction, along with significant renovations to the existing baggage handling system. The facility will feature 16 new gates, advanced passenger processing and security systems, expanded concessions, modern lounge spaces, and international arrival capabilities – further strengthening Tampa International Airport’s ability to support the region’s rapid growth.
Our involvement began early, with preconstruction budgeting efforts starting in July 2023. Following a rigorous selection process that included multiple interviews and graded, in-person presentations, APG scored the highest out of five bidders and was formally awarded the design assist services electrical contract in February 2025. Design assist delivery places a premium on performance, collaboration, and accountability – success during preconstruction is what earns the opportunity to execute the main scope of work. And we earned it!
For more than a year, our preconstruction team, led by Chief Estimator Matt Mercer, worked through an intensive process that included extensive constructability reviews and hundreds of pricing updates on a constantly evolving design. Over the same period, APG was also contracted to perform early enabling work, delivering power to a massive trailer compound which would support hundreds of on-site personnel across multiple trades. Throughout every phase, our VDC team has been instrumental to success, with Artie Hackett and Adam Pantapas leading project modeling to support coordination and a high-quality installation.
Recently, we successfully completed our design assist scope and were officially recommended as the best-value electrical contractor. With a finalized design in hand, construction is now moving forward under the leadership of Eric Beal, Leivy Avila, Ted Maczuga, Chris Gobright, and Mike Millard.
We’re confident this project will be a career highlight for many and a lasting reflection of Tampa Bay’s incredible growth. We are truly grateful to our longtime partners at Hensel Phelps and the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority for trusting us with this complex and transformative project.
Congratulations to everyone involved on this outstanding achievement, and stay tuned for future updates!
